Steer Mom To The Perfect Present

Moms are always there when we need them most: from teaching us how to ride a bike to comforting us during our first heartbreak. Whenever I was having a bad day growing up, my mom always went out and got me a red velvet cupcake from my favorite bakery – even if it would make her a little late running errands or driving to work. She was there to pick me up from the bus and support me at all my mediocre middle school band concerts – something I will never forget. But it can be hard to find ways to say thank you that can even amount to all the kindness any mom has done for us. So, to get an idea, I decided to go out and ask mothers what they think the perfect Mother’s Day gift is this year. Some gift fan favorites were a new cookbook, an exercise class pass, or, best of all a gift that never fails, a brand-new car.

My mother always said, “it’s easy to fall victim to routine.” She was constantly looking for ways to make life more interesting when my siblings and I were growing up. She said one of the ways she would switch it up during the week would be through trying to make new dinners and recipes. One year, we decided to get her the cookbook “Cook with Me: 150 Recipes for the Home Cook” by Alex Guarnaschelli. My mother still says it is one of our best gifts to date. Better yet, it was a winner for the whole family since we got some pretty great meals out of it too! I still reminisce over her impressive risotto with tomato and parmesan cheese. It is a gift we can all love and take advantage of.

A popular gift of many of my friend’s mothers was an exercise class pass. They loved it because it forced them to carve out “me” time and disconnect from all the stresses of the outside world. Whether it was Barry’s Boot Camp or Equinox, it got moms moving and energized and left them wanting more. Some of my friends even coordinated so their moms could all go to the same classes together – brilliant! They all stated it was an activity they enjoyed and appreciated. Some even do holiday sales and discounts! It was another great gift to add some pizzazz to their generally less exciting weekly routine.

Lastly, the most popular and memorable gift was a brand-new car. People described it as one of the biggest surprises that had a positive impact on their daily routine. The mothers claimed they were so happy to have found something they loved without going through the hassle of test driving a bunch of options and price comparing dealerships and vehicles. The car served as a surprise that many mothers didn’t know they needed.

So, as a grand gesture to thank her for all she had done for me, a car seemed like the perfect gift that was impossible not to fall in love with. She had been driving the same beat-up car for twelve years. She claimed that it was so homey she didn’t know if she could ever find something as good.

A year later my father and I set out to find her a car that was seemingly as perfect and reliable as she is. We wanted to find one that could fit the whole family, was great for road trips and had her favorite feature of all – heated seats and steering wheel. We went from dealership to dealership and finally found a perfect SUV in her favorite color – navy. It was unbelievable; it had high tech features, comfortable seats and great fuel efficiency. We took the car it home, put it on the driveway and wrapped it with a large bow. When we took my mom outside, I can attest that it was one of the happiest moments for her. She grinned from ear to ear and started to tear up. She exclaimed, “this is the best Mother’s Day present in the whole world.” So, if you have hit a brick wall trying to figure out what to get your mother for this Mother’s Day – head on over to a dealership and get her something she can use and love every day.

A Spring Break To Remember

A break from reality, a time to experience new places – spring break is an annual occurrence that everyone longs for. My friends and I sat around the kitchen table tapping our fingers and frantically typing, trying to plan the perfect getaway. With COVID-19 cutting a chunk out of our college experience, we missed the opportunity to study abroad. Soon, we would all be living in different cities working full-time jobs, so it was important to make the best of what little time we had left together.

Nashville had always been on our bucket list of places to see, but we also wanted to see as many places as we could during the coveted week off from school. So, we soon realized the only way to make this possible: turn it into a road trip. Having a car gave us the ability to go wherever we wanted, when we wanted, and even an opportunity to make changes on the go if need be. We could see all the places we dreamt of on our schedule. And, being college students on a budget, it gave us an added bonus of cost saving (as compared to flying). My mom always said to me that driving cross-country with her friends in college was, to this day, the highlight of her life. I was so excited to create that same experience for myself.

My friends and I decided to pack light and threw all of our bags into the trunk of my friend’s brand new car. We drove in long shifts – one tank of gas to empty each. Lucky for us, we had a fuel-efficient vehicle and didn’t need to constantly fill the tank. We went from Memphis to Nashville to the Bluffs to Atlanta and all the way down to Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida to see the TPC Sawgrass PGA Competition. We would cover everything from live music to hiking in nature to watching our favorite sport. It was the perfect travel plan, making our bucket list dreams a reality.

The drive down to Tennessee was one of the highlights. We had all the windows down blasting music we grew up listening to on our CD players – with some top features from Rihanna and Natasha Bedingfield, of course. The Bluetooth seamlessly switched song-to-song keeping our energy and happiness alive. We drove down the highway coasting lane to lane effortlessly; those conversations and moments are some I will remember for the rest of my life.

Nashville and Memphis had some of the best barbeque I had ever eaten. I still think about Martin’s Barbecue ribs and coleslaw daily. Driving down Broadway hearing old Dolly Parton songs and seeing people dancing in the streets felt like a fever dream. The energy on “Lower Broad” was electric. Driving through the birth city of country music gave me a newfound love and appreciation for the genre, without even setting foot outside the car yet.

After a few nights of cultural enrichment and dancing, we set out for Georgia. Driving through nature gave a unique sense of serenity and peace. Seeing mountain after mountain, feeling one with nature in pure isolation was the best feeling. We set out on a two day hike and camped out in the woods. Watching the sun set over the mountains was truly magnificent. Atlanta did not disappoint either, with its gorgeous architecture and fascinating history.

As we went from place to place we picked up a new bumper sticker from each, engraving our car with all the memories we had made. Ending our trip in Florida, watching Phil Mickelson hit a birdie was the cherry on top of a perfect road trip. The only reason we got through it all was the perfect vehicle: amazing audio features, comfortable seats and safety features. This reassured my parents enough to stop texting me every five minutes, asking me “are you being safe?” This trip is an experience I will never forget and I am so glad I was able to make it happen despite all the craziness going on in the world.

This Car Doesn’t Work The Way It Should…

April Fools’ Day is just around the corner, so be sure to keep your wits about you against pranks from friends and family, and more importantly, bad deals. Don’t get tricked into doing or buying a vehicle that does not work for you. Cars with short production times will leave you kicking yourself and being the brunt of the joke. Don’t become an April Fools’ Day joke and be sure to avoid these cars below.

One of the first flops I will discuss is the Kia Cadenza. It fell short of being special in every regard within the category of spacious sedans with great performance and fuel efficiency. It was thought to be too expensive for what it was and competed directly with the selling of the Kia Stinger. The Stinger accomplished all that the Cadenza could not – like a sore winner older sibling. The visibility of the driver side windows are considered poor and the headlights are described as “a disappointment.” (Motorbiscuit.com) To no one’s surprise it was gone within one year after two recall campaigns – just like the punch line of a bad joke that everyone keeps telling.

Kia

Another great tale was the Mazda CX-5 Skyactiv-D. It should’ve remained a joke, but the diesel powered vehicle was brought to life in 2019. And to this day, car dealerships are still trying to clear out the original stock. Like our good friend Kia Cadenza, it fell flat in the sea of competitors. Plenty of other hybrid vehicles soared past it in terms of performance, fuel efficiency and more. People stated they felt the “turbo lag” as compared to other hybrid vehicles such as the RAV4. Generally, to top it all off, diesel is more expensive than gasoline – making it less enticing than other vehicles. So, keep that joke to yourself and find another car to better suit your needs this season.

Mazda

The last failed vehicle I will discuss is the Fiat 124 Spider. Fiat and Mazda teamed up together to create a vehicle made in Japan with an engine from Italy… I’m sure you can only imagine how COVID-19 supply chain issues went hand in hand with pushing the failure of this vehicle. It was thought to not be very special otherwise and is a little too similar to the Mazda MX-5 Miata. The customer complaints include poor suspension, visibility and electrical problems. It was surprising how many engine problems were reported for this car, since the engines made in Italy typically run smooth.  It even had the honor of receiving the worst rating that J.D. power gives for cars (J.D. Power, 2020). It was discontinued in 2020 and car companies are still trying to sell the leftover stock. Maybe steer clear of the punch line and avoid this vehicle…

Fiat

Hopefully this trip down memory lane can help you brainstorm up your next joke or tale to tell. But now you know how to keep your eyes peeled for tricks and scams coming up this holiday season. The car you need matters, so don’t get caught up in smart advertising or new models. Follow the facts to the car that best suits your needs with features you can trust. Compare to similar cars in the space, competitors, and fuel efficiency to make sure you are not becoming the punch line of the next joke. If anyone asks you to purchase the Kia Cadenza, Mazda CX-5 Skyactiv-D, or Fiat 124 Spider, you know what to do.

Fall in Love with Your Daily Commute

Looking to spice up your life this Valentine’s Day?

Start with a daily task that is daunting to some but darling to others – your commute. Treat yourself to sweet accessories that upgrade
your current ride. Or pop the question to a new vehicle and fall in love all over again. After all, even the dreamiest relationships have rough patches, but you can always count on the car of your dreams for a smooth ride every commute.

Commutes are a lot like relationships; they can become routine…boring. Sitting in the car for twenty-minutes, thirty-minutes or even a two hour commute or more can quickly lose its luster.

Love Your Car

My good friend from work said to me, “I drive six hours roundtrip and I wouldn’t change a thing.” I had to know, what’s her secret? She said that she learned how to romanticize her morning commute and make it something she could look forward to. Sometimes she would set the mood with an NPR podcast, other times it was an old Elton John album. Anything that could keep her smiling and driving without counting the minutes (and miles) – like a good, happy, healthy relationship. But the thing that trumped it all was having a vehicle she loves.

Waking up to a brisk morning, with the ability to remotely start her car from her house, warming as her coffee brewed, was like a gift from Cupid. The comfortable and adjustable seats, programmed just for her, allowed her to sink in and relax, knowing she had nothing but time to herself. And most satisfying, knowing that she worked hard to earn it and pay for it herself and could call it “hers.” It symbolized her perseverance and made her proud to press the start button every morning. She said, “I started to realize after a long day of emails, calls, and running around I was enamored with my long drive home. Make your day, your vehicle, and your life something to adore.”

Her story got me thinking about my own drive. Even though my drive is not nearly as long as hers, there still must be a way to make me romanticize the drive the way she had. I decided to take her advice and went into a dealership to see if Cupid’s bow would strike. With Valentine’s Day fast-approaching and being in the “independent” category, this was the perfect excuse to treat myself. And just like that, I fell in love with the first car I saw. Four doors, glistening exterior and all the technologically advanced features I could dream of at an affordable price. It was as if the song “At Last” by Etta James started playing. I knew this car could take the monotony out of my daily commute and make my drive something I could fall in love with. I was ready to enter into the perfect relationship with a vehicle I could love and trust.

Six months later, I still jump out of bed in the morning and smile as I start my car warming in the driveway in the cold winter. I connect my Bluetooth and Wi-Fi and start playing my smooth jazz soundtrack. Driving down the highway with mounds and mounds of traffic flowing around me at rush hour but still remaining filled with joy; I can confidently say I have fallen in love with my commute.

Simple Ways to Save When Bringing Your Car to College

One of the most significant parts of planning to go to college is ways to save money. Thus, here are some tips on how you can save money or prevent financial loss when taking your car to college:

  • Empty Your Car- Prevent items from getting stolen by ensuring that you double-check that you do not leave anything in your vehicle. Whether it is valuable or not does matter to a thief, and the last thing you need is to pay for a broken window, door, or find that your vehicle has been stolen.
  • Low-Mileage Car Insurance- Find out from your insurance agent if you qualify for low-mileage car insurance. If you do not plan on using your car often, some insurance companies offer discounts that can help you save money.
  • Vehicle Maintenance- Whether you drive your vehicle a lot or not, you should never let it sit for too long. A sitting vehicle does not remain in good condition over time. Therefore, you need to start your car and drive your vehicle to let the engine warm up. Vehicle maintenance is equally important to ensure the health of your vehicle remains solid. You can always schedule a service appointment with us near Conway, SC, and we will be happy to help you!
  • Park Your Car in Well Lit Areas- If you can, you should always aim to park your vehicle in well-lit areas. Therefore, although you cannot see your vehicle, the lights will deter vandals or thieves. Other people can see your car as well, which helps prevent break-ins.
  • Avoid Parking Tickets- Sometimes it is unavoidable, but do your best to avoid getting parking tickets. They can add up quite quickly. If you get a parking ticket, be sure to pay them on time to avoid additional fees.

How to Prevent Your Car from Feeding on Fuel

One way to prevent your car from feeding on fuel is to get a new car or a new-to-you car. For many Myrtle Beach, SC drivers search for the best-used cars for college students in Shallotte. At Victory Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, we have plenty of used vehicles within our inventory that make an excellent choice for college students. Whether you are looking for a used car or have a car already, here are some fuel-saving tips:

  • Download a Smartphone Gas App – Whether you are new to the area or not, downloading a smartphone gas app is a terrific idea. Thus, while on the go, you can always find the gas station that has the cheapest gas.
  • Unload Your Trunk – Believe it or not, storing too much stuff within the trunk of your car can cause your vehicle to use more gas. You need to unload your trunk to prevent your vehicle from dragging and consuming more gas than it needs to due to too many items in your trunk.
  • Check Your Tire Pressure – You need all four tires to have good air tire pressure. Not only for your safety but to prevent you from spending more time at the pumps. Check your tire pressure regularly at gas stations or our service center.

How to Get a Car Loan

Get a car loan faster by following these easy steps:

Check Your Credit Report First

Do not apply for a car loan without checking your credit report first, Conway, SC drivers! You need to know your score, as it plays a vital role in whether you will be approved for a car loan and the percentage for your interest rate.

You can check your credit score yearly for FREE at any of these trusted sites; Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. Keep in mind that a sub-prime or poor credit score is typically 600 or less. But do not worry, you can always increase your score.

Increase Your Credit Score

If your credit score is less than ideal, you want to make strides to increase your score before applying for a car loan. Look at your report and prioritize which creditor you can pay off or make payments on.

Research Lenders

There are various car loan lenders in the Myrtle Beach, SC area. However, you should not stop at the first auto loan lender you see. Shop for multiple lenders and see what they quote you.

Remember that some lenders will do a “hard” pull on your credit report, which consists of looking over your entire credit report. Other car loan lenders will do a “soft” pull on your credit report. Which means they are likely only to review your credit score. Both types of credit checks have to do with whether you pre-qualify or get a pre-approval.

Which is Better? Pre-approval or Pre-Qualification

There is a difference between being pre-approved or pre-qualified. Here is what you need to know:

Pre-Qualification

When you are pre-qualified, you will get a car loan within a given rate or range. Lenders will only do a “soft” pull and check your credit score.

Pre-Approval

When you receive a pre-approval, lenders tend to take you more seriously. They will do a “hard” pull on your credit to review your credit report and not just your score.

Regardless, you are not guaranteed a car loan for either a pre-approval or pre-qualification. You need to work on your credit score, if necessary, to improve your interest rate.

Car Loan Pre-Approval

You can disregard other lender auto loan offers and do the following once you find a pre-approval that works with your budget:

Negotiate or Accept Car Loan Offer

You do not have to accept a car loan offer off the bat. Instead, you can try and negotiate to see if there is some wiggle room for you to save money.

Finalize your Car Loan

Once you accept your car loan offer, it is time to finalize your car loan. You need to review your contract to ensure there are no hidden costs or fees. On the contract, you should only see the price of the car, sales tax, documentation fee, and registration costs. If there are other fees on your agreement that you did not already agree to, question them. Here are some hidden costs to look out for on your car loan contract:

  • Length of Term
  • Additional Add-Ons
  • GAP Insurance
  • Early Payoff Penalty

How Does Selling Your Car to a Dealership Work?

The process of selling your car to a dealership is a lot simpler than you think. To get the most bang for your buck, you can do the following, which will also make the process faster:

  • Clean Your Car: Clean the interior and exterior of your vehicle. Give the dash a good wipedown and vacuum the seats and mats. Just like with people, first impressions are everything, and in this case, they can be the difference of hundreds of dollars.
  • Note the Benefits of Your Vehicle: Write down the additional features or benefits that your car offers. Include extra key fobs, mounts, and any other extra highlights.
  • Vehicle Maintenance History: The history of the maintenance of your car plays a significant role in the value of your vehicle. Thus, visit our service center to obtain a vehicle maintenance history or get one from your chosen car garage.
  • Title of Car: You can have the process of selling your car to a dealership go a lot faster if you bring the car’s title with you.
  • Car Value: There are free tools found on Cars.com and Kelley Blue Book (KBB)
  • Choose Your Dealership Carefully: Do not just go to the first dealership you can think of; do your research. You can then compare prices and get the most value from your vehicle, Conway, SC drivers.

What to Expect When Selling My Car to a Dealership

There are specific steps you can take to be proactive, as well as prepare so you can know what to expect when selling your car to a dealership:

  • Make an Appointment: Do not walk into a dealership to sell your vehicle. You certainly can, but it is better to make an appointment so the salesperson or used car manager can have the paperwork ready for you. A scheduled meeting will also have you wait for less.
  • Used Car Manager or Salesperson: When selling your car to a dealership, you can expect to speak with a salesperson or used car sales manager. Either will run a vehicle history report on your vehicle.
  • Vehicle Inspection: The estimation in hand is not the final price you will receive. Typically the number fluctuates due to the physical examination of the vehicle’s overall condition and mechanics.
  • Consider the Offer: Consider all offers, but choose the best price for your vehicle. At Victory Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram near Myrtle Beach, SC, we understand how much a car can mean to you. Therefore, do not settle.

What Goes Into Calculating Your Trade-In Value?

You want to find out the estimated market value of your vehicle by using the Value my trade tool on our website. Remember, the value is only an estimate. The other factors a dealership takes into account include:

  • Vehicle make and model
  • Age
  • Mileage
  • Appearance
  • Mechanical condition
  • Maintenance records
  • Vehicle history report
  • Local market

The overall maintenance and condition your current vehicle is in will affect the trade-in value negatively or positively. So, when asking, “Should I fix my car before trading it in?” Know that improving its condition does help increase the overall value of your car, but it is not the only factor taken into consideration.

To Fix or Not to Fix Your Vehicle?

Fixing any dents and dings, as well as detailing your vehicle, can help with the trade-in value. You, of course, want to repair what your budget can afford. But a maintenance check on your car can help as well. Anything more will likely decrease your return on investment, so freshen up the look, and feel of your vehicle before a trade-in.

Recommended Vehicle Fixes

To be less vague and more descriptive on what can increase the value of your trade-in vehicle, Conway, SC drivers, here are affordable fixes you can do:

  • Thoroughly clean your car inside and out
  • Clean upholstery to remove odors
  • Fill in scratches with a paint pen
  • Top off fluids
  • Replace wipers
  • Replace burned-out bulbs
  • Fix windshield cracks (your insurance may cover this)
  • Buff foggy headlight/taillights

How Does Trading In a Financed Car Work?

Trading in a financed car in Conway, SC isn’t that hard. There are a couple of steps you will have to follow.

  1. Find out what the remaining balance is on your loan. It’s typically listed on your monthly financial statement.
  2. Use our trade valuation tool or one from a third party (such as Kelley Blue Book) to get an estimate on the value of your current vehicle. Please note, this is simply an estimate, and only once your vehicle has been physically inspected will you get a firm offer.
  3. If the remaining balance on your auto loan is less than the trade-in offer from the dealership, the money that’s leftover will go to the purchase price of the next car.
  4. If you owe more money than the trade-in value is worth, you’ll have to roll over your remaining balance to the next car loan.

What Does “Rolling Over” A Loan Mean?

Rolling over a loan is when the dealership claims they will pay off your old loan no matter how much you owe. Wilmington drivers should take note, though, that this is too good to be true. All this does is put the price onto your new loan on that next car, meaning you’re essentially just changing your financing partner to the new dealership. Being able to trade in a car that’s not paid off is one of the best reasons to trade-in at a dealership over selling privately.
